The Problem
Sports Elite arose from the need in the Costa Rican market for a new medium, a digital and print platform dedicated to sports, an informative platform that would consider sports beyond soccer and become a voice for the many diverse disciplines that are passionately practiced in this great little country called Costa Rica.
The Solution
With that vision, a group of experienced sports journalists was assembled to bring Sports Elite to life. Additionally, the Sports Elite Awards for Sports Excellence were created, convening for the first time the national sports press to elect, through voting, the best athletes in Costa Rica.
After much perseverance, in 2017, the first edition was welcomed: a fresh edition with a primary color palette inspired by the most popular sports in Costa Rica: soccer (green), cycling (black), tennis (blue), etc. Additionally, a clean aesthetic was built with bold accents using sans-serif typography, emphasizing headlines and portraits in photographs.
Many lines on the pages mimic movement, trying to take the reader on a journey through the best athletes in Costa Rica. Tension and balance are concepts that were used to place text blocks in a pleasing manner, where negative space takes on great value, inviting the reader to learn about the story of each character.
Finally, we were able to feature the writing of renowned journalists who we were only accustomed to seeing on television or hearing on the radio; and we managed to inspire with the life stories of our athletes, all of them idols, whom we thank for having trusted in our call.” Marjorie Espinal, Editor.
