About AGECO

AGECO (Costa Rican Gerontological Association) is a non-governmental organization that works with volunteers in various communities throughout the country, establishing and strengthening groups related to older adults.

Buena Vida magazine is part of the dissemination actions that AGECO carries out in order to fight against stereotypes that denigrate and disqualify older adults. Furthermore, this publication functions as a means to expose topics related to active aging, stimulating physical, intellectual, and recreational activity in this population.

The Problem

The “Buena Vida” magazine addresses a critical problem facing older adults: the prevalence of negative stereotypes and the lack of resources promoting active aging. Many seniors encounter societal misconceptions that portray aging as a period of decline and disengagement. This can lead to social isolation, limited opportunities, and a diminished sense of purpose.

The Solution

With a total of 18 pages plus the front and back cover, the magazine’s design is characterized by a layout with a simple grid and sans-serif fonts for the body text and serif fonts for the headlines. At the time of execution, typography size standards were considered so that older adults would not have difficulties reading it. Additionally, a color palette based on the brand manual is used: the colors yellow, green, and blue are maintained throughout the magazine.

There are some recurring elements, such as color blocks or filters in some photographs, this to generate high contrasts to, again, facilitate reading. Additionally, ample spacing is considered to guide the reader through the public policy, health, ‘of our interest’, AGECO short notes, and other sections.
